UI/UX Design and Management for GPS Trackit
GPS Trackit is an industry leader in providing fleet management, telematics and video telematic solutions worldwide.
Key Accomplishments:
Created a UX team that provided the foundation required for growth within a SaaS company that had no previous focus or attention to user experience.
Redesigned the flagship platform and led UX initiatives through direct outreach to users, including workshops, beta testing, and data analysis, resulting in enhanced user empathy and reduced churn.
Collaborated with key stakeholders to define product requirements, document use-cases, and translate business needs into impactful experiences based on user research.
Developed personas, user journeys, wireframes, and prototypes to quickly validate ideas.
Implemented a design system, style guide, and component library, significantly reducing implementation time for new features and improving consistency to streamline design elements.
Objectives:
Redesign the platform and primary features to improve usability, reduce churn and increase product adoption, as well as unify design elements across all products, streamline the design and development process, and improve speed an accuracy for implementing new features.
Summary:
To unify the design aesthetic across all platforms and simplify the development process, I developed a custom design system and comprehensive style guide. This unified design elements, streamlined our processes, and reduced implementation time for new features by offering a reusable component library and ensuring consistency across platforms.
I facilitated user workshops, one-on-one interviews, and promoted the in-app feedback tab to gather user feedback and establish a baseline for issues and pain points users were experiencing. I used that feedback to create sketches, wireframes and high fidelity mockups that I used to design the company’s primary features, including maps, behavior, reports and maintenance, and get early validation from users and key stakeholders. I worked the director of product management to define requirements and user stories based on my user research. I collaborated with development and architecture to refine and get the features implemented and released. I performed design reviews after each demo and documented necessary changes via Jira. When I felt the feature was ready for user testing, I created a beta program and qualified users based on feedback submitted via the platform and through direct outreach to sales and support.
I followed up with users directly via additional interviews to gather post beta feedback and validate design decisions. I also asked internal members to join the beta and help me test the new feature and submit feedback.

GPS Trackit Cloud Platform
GPS Trackit it an industry leader in providing fleet management, telematics and video telematic solutions to hundreds of thousands of vehicles worldwide. Since 2002, GPS Trackit has been a pioneering force in the cloud-based, IoT fleet solutions industry. Our award-winning, industry-leading technology and focus on world-class customer service has earned us a place on Deloitte's Technology Fast 500 list and serves over 12,000+ fleets globally.
Style Guide and Design System
To establish design standards, I developed a custom design system, uniting brand elements, colors, fonts, patterns, and iconography. This streamlined our processes, and reduced implementation time for new features by offering a reusable component library and ensuring consistency across platforms. By implementing this system, we achieved a cohesive and scalable design aesthetic, enhancing user experience and brand recognition.
In my efforts to establish consistent design elements, prioritize brand awareness and enhance user experience, I created a comprehensive style guide that served as a foundation for all elements in the platform. This system was further utilized to create a reusable component library, enabling the development team to implement designs with increased efficiency and precision, ultimately improving the overall speed and accuracy of the development process and ensuring a consistent design aesthetic across all products.
Driver Behavior Feature
Drivers with risky driving behavior are dangerous and costly. As a fleet manager or owner, it’s important to have visibility into these kinds of behaviors to help your drivers adhere to safety and fuel saving guidelines to mitigate risks and costs associated with risky driving behavior.
To solve for these concerns, I designed the driver behavior feature. Users can track the driving behavior of their drivers by using the behavior feature. The more infractions a driver has, the higher their score will be, representing a higher risk driver. The lower the score, the lower the risk.
Users can click the gear icon at the top right of the driver safety score card to flip the card and edit weights, scores and points applied to specific driving behaviors.
If the user has drivers that are consistently at a high risk level, they can easily identify those drivers (color coded in red) and implement coaching and additional training or warnings. For drivers consistently at a low risk level, the user can choose to use this data for special rewards or bonuses.
The user can view the data by vehicle or driver and can also view behavior trends over time. For example, if a driver was at a high risk level and received training, the manager can view their driving behavior over a period of time to see if the risk level is improving or if the driver needs additional coaching.
Video Feature
With video enabled GPS devices, users can detect unsafe and inefficient driving behaviors like speeding, hard braking, and otherwise distracted driving. If a driver makes a sharp turn or is identified as being distracted, the video device will record the behavior and save it to the video tab.
To help users view and manage the snapshots and video clips, I designed the video feature using tiles. I wanted to give users a way to quickly see a snapshot of the behavior detected and see pertinent details. I also wanted to provide them with a way to sample the video without have to download it or go to a video detail page, so the tiles are all clickable. If the user clicks the play button on the video thumbnail, the video will begin playing so they can review the behavior and quickly decide if the clip is valuable or not.
Report Feature
For fleet managers and owners, data is key. They need to be able to explore on-demand, real-time reports, like viewing temperature sensors on refrigerated trucks, or speed and safety reports for their drivers or get details on miles driven per state to track fuel taxes.
The platform already had a legacy reporting feature in place. The product team was tasked with the challenge of consolidating all our platforms and migrating users into one app. In order to do so, we needed to introduce the concept of tagging to satisfy a requirement from one of our other platforms. This created a myriad of issues and meant that the legacy reports feature would need to be redesigned to support tags.
The initial release was a disaster, so I dug in to investigate what went wrong and redesign the feature using direct user feedback. I facilitated user workshops, one-on-one interviews, and promoted the in-app feedback tab to begin gathering user feedback and establish a baseline for issues and pain points our users were experiencing.
I found that a huge portion of the issues were due to the software malfunctioning but some were performance based as well. I documented all findings and used the feedback and research to design a new, more performant solution that allowed users to get the data they needed more quickly. I also designed a feature where they could favorite frequently run reports and run the report again with one click. I introduced inline editing, bulk features, and make the reports easier to read and easier on printer ink.
I got early validation from users and shared with key stakeholders. From there I worked the director of product management to define requirements and user stories based on my user research. When the project was finally ready for refinement, I worked with the head of development and architecture to figure out how to make my solution actually work between the backend system and code react.
I performed design reviews after each demo and documented necessary changes via Jira. When I felt the feature was ready for user testing, I created a beta program and qualified users based on feedback submitted via the platform, users I already formed relationships with during workshops and interviews, and through direct outreach to sales and support, by creating a dedicated slack channel for internal team members to submit customer feedback and suggest candidates for the beta program.
I followed up with users directly through additional interviews to gather post beta feedback and validate design decisions. I also asked internal members to join the beta and help me test the new feature and submit feedback. Users were telling me that they were actually logging into beta to run all of their reports because it was so much better than the initial release. After all change requests were complete, I gave the green light to release to production. We received overwhelming positive feedback. The feature was a huge success.
Mobile App
The mobile app was designed to allow users access to their key features while in the field. If a user is on site, they can quickly see available units, vehicle status, get directions to a customer site, get diagnostic info, or pull up video from a dash cam.
